The History of LaChiusa
For over six centuries, the walls of LaChiusa have stood as a quiet guardian over the Tuscan hills. From its origins as a medieval toll station to a bustling 14th-century olive mill, our estate is a meticulously preserved piece of Italian history, inviting you to step back in time without sacrificing modern luxury.
Deep Roots in the Tuscan Soil
True luxury cannot be built overnight; it must be cultivated across generations. The story of LaChiusa is intricately woven into the fabric of Montefollonico itself. Today, as you walk the same ancient paths and dine beneath the same brick arches as travelers did hundreds of years ago, you become part of a story that has been unfolding since the Middle Ages.
A Medieval Outpost
Long before it became a sanctuary of hospitality, the grounds of LaChiusa served a highly strategic purpose. In the 12th century, the estate acted as the guarded entrance and toll collector for the hilltop village of Montefollonico. The ancient dirt road that connected the village to Montepulciano—Tuscany’s most famous hilltop town—ran directly through our property, welcoming weary travelers and merchants traversing the Val d’Orcia.
Historic Soul, Modern Luxury
Today, LaChiusa has been lovingly restored by George and Linda to preserve its profound architectural heritage. The original wooden beams, authentic terracotta floors, and rustic brick archways remain untouched, now blending seamlessly with the refined comforts of a world-class boutique agriturismo. It is a place where the unhurried rhythms of the past meet the acclaimed garden-to-table culinary philosophy of the present.
Centuries of Liquid Gold
By the 15th century, the toll station was transformed into a vital agricultural hub. Opening its doors as a working olive oil mill in 1353, LaChiusa became the heartbeat of the local farming community. For over 600 years, the heavy stone presses turned out the region’s finest “liquid gold.” Today, that legacy lives on in our sprawling 1,000-tree olive grove, where some of our majestic trees have been producing fruit for over 300 years.
Celebrated Worldwide
While we take immense pride in our rustic 14th-century roots, LaChiusa is also a celebrated destination for modern luxury and culinary excellence. We are honored to be named among the Top 10% of restaurants worldwide—an award that reflects our unwavering commitment to authentic, garden-to-table Tuscan dining. Beyond the kitchen, our estate has become one of the most sought-after venues in the Val d’Orcia for bespoke destination weddings and exclusive private events, offering guests a breathtaking, sun-drenched sanctuary overlooking the rolling hills of Montepulciano.
